A First Look

You may or may not be familiar with the wedding lingo of “First Look.”  A “First Look” is where the bride and groom meet for a special moment before the ceremony and are then able to take pictures together.

Event Specialist Lori-Ann Walker says, “A First Look is perfect for the more social brides and grooms who don’t want to miss out on any of their “party time” with their guests and allows them to experience the cocktail hour.  Otherwise, that time need to be used portraits of the bride and groom together.”  lela_stephen_114 lela_stephen_117

Preferred photographer Ray Tisdale of 35 Atlanta says , “When we first started photographing weddings back in 2003, most couples still opted to side with tradition by waiting to see each other at the wedding ceremony.  However, these days more than half of our couples have a “first look”.  For some, it’s simply a matter of logistics (especially if you want daylight outdoor photos together but the ceremony is in the evening.  In many cases, it’s simply to be able to share some time together before the whirlwind of the ceremony and reception begins.  In the Jewish faith, it’s pretty much a requirement.  So our couples have lots of reasons they decide a “first look” is for them, but we try not to influence the decision one way or the other.  We simply mention the reasons other couples have done it, give our opinion regarding light based on the time of day (and season) and let our couples come to their own conclusions.  After all, it’s our job to faithfully document their day as THEY decide it should happen.  But we’re always happy to share our experience based on the 1,000+ weddings we’ve shot.”

Ray captured this first look beautifully from Hannah and Neal’s wedding in August:
